CHAPTER TEN

Preparations were intense over the coming days. Captain Scott agreed to take them, lashing the coach and the carriage to his deck, certain the horses would travel well despite the small ship he managed to find for the countess.

A guard was left in front of the locked bedroom where Charlotte was housed, but the rest of the staff was called into the dining room during the children’s nap time.

“Please, everyone, take a seat. What I have to tell you must not be repeated.” Abigail waited until the confused staff had all arrived and sat cautiously at the long dining room table, each taking a seat. “I am closing up Worthington House for an indefinite period of time,” she began and saw many of them exchanging looks. They would have to find other positions, and this worried them. It was not always easy to find employment. “I am offering you all a position in my retinue until I once again settle in another house, whether it is here or in another country.” No one had missed the preparations or the meetings with the captain. They all knew that Charlotte was locked in a room upstairs, and no one could speak to her. “My children and I will be leaving in the next few days. I want you all to think carefully about this. I do not know where we will end up, but I will continue to pay you to stay in my service and help me to set up a household when we finally find a new home.” She saw many exchanging looks. “I want to make it clear that any who don’t go with us will still get a letter of recommendation, and I won’t hold it against you if you decide not to join us on this trip. I want you all to know I have appreciated your services, and I hope you will come with us.”

“Even me and the Mrs.?” Warren asked.

“If you two do not wish to go, I’ll leave the house in your capable hands, but I know you won’t need the maids or the footmen, and eventually, I will. Any who don’t want to go, I understand, but I will need your decision within the next day. We need to plan for the number of people going with us.”

“That includes us?” one of the footmen asked at the same time a maid asked.

“Yes, that does include you,” she looked at both spokespeople for their ranks. “It may seem odd at first, but we’ll hire wagons to transport you, and I’ll provide for you until we get a house set up somewhere else,” she promised. “Let me know,” she said as she stood up. Everyone got up from their seats quickly, standing when the lady of the house stood. “I’ll let you speak amongst yourselves now and decide.” She nodded to Sir Boardman who had joined her, and they left to walk across the townhouse.

“That’s very generous of you,” he said, shocked that she would do this and wondering at the expense.
